Glasgow‘s most successful artist to date shows Croque Mort, a small series of photographs, at

the Lloyd Jerome Gallery. The essential gen on the dude is this: Gordon was born in Glasgow, 1966, attended Glasgow School of Art, won the Turner Prize in 1996 and the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998. His film and video work has referenced Psycho, The Searchers and Taxi Driver and his Self- portrait as Kurt Cobain, as Andy Warhol, as Myra Hindley, as Marilyn Monroe (1996) is now iconic in its own right.

REASONS TO GO SEE

SIMON STARLING

1 He's a rising star Starling is nominated for this year's Hugo Boss Prize (soon to be announced). awarded in collaboration With the Guggenheim FOundation. It could earn him not only further acclaim but also a sweet $50,000. He is one of only three UK artists exhibiting at this year's sao Paolo Biennial; his WOlk was included in the British Art Show (2001) and the Venice Biennale (2003) the first time there was an excluswely Scottish Payilion at the event (even althOiigh Starling was born in Epsom). Jim Lambie and Claire Barclay fellow Glasgow School of Art Graduates - also exhibited with Starling in this symbolic and significant fOray into the art world.

2 l-lls work breaks down Starling's site-specific works break down the history of the object and its connotations sometimes spectacularly and literally, as in 'lnverted Retrograde Theine‘ (Vienna. 2001). where Arnold Schdnberg's music is translated into lights flashing over a room full of skillfully re/deconstructed planes.

3 He liberates weeds ln ‘lsland For Weeds‘ (2003) Starling symbolically freed Rhododendron ponticum (which was introduced to Scotland and grows as a weed). planting the bushes on a barge in a Rococo palace in Venice. Punning on the idea of Venice as a collection of linked islands. Starling links this beautiful weed to all the others frequenting the city during the festival.

4 He’s funny His collections of altered objects: chairs. plants. pianos. cars and vans. etc. critique the gallery or museum's wish to collect and present ‘art objects'. but always with flair and humor rather than the didacticism of minimalist interventions.

5 He’s clever and honest Starling's intelligent and sprawling research-based works explore authorship and originality, representing familiar objects to the viewer and relocating them in the gallery or in relation to the site of their production. Rather than the usual dilettantish flirt with modernism. Starling's complex works explore correspondences between the objects selected and their country or Site of origin. (Alexander Kennedy)
