DAY 1

Members 272,537 Books registered 2 Books caught 0 Good karma Small amounts

Register and set my first book free into the wild (if Glasgow‘s West End can be called that). My weapon of choice: Negative Space by Zoe Strachan. propped up by the BBC centre. As there's no one around. the drop off proves surprisingly easy. When I return. it's gone.

My work. however, is not done. The next release is planned for the Glasgow underground, a popular choice for local book crossers. This proves more difficult. The train is busy and I'm worried that some helpful soul will try to give the book back to me as I leave. I keep my seat until the doors are beeping shut, then make a dash for it leaving the book nestled among the empty Ribena cartons and trashed copies of The Metro.

By the end of the day. no one has registered having found either of the novels.

DAY 3

Members 273,003 Books registered 3 Books caught 0 Good karma Still hopeful

With no sign of either of my books being journalled. l opt to release another in a park. A teenage couple on the adjacent bench clock me but don't seem compelled to let each other go for long

enough to take a look. Still no luck with anyone registering one of mine as found. DAY 12

Good karma Nothing some mild cheating won’t fix

The cheating involves going along to a local book crossing meetup (organised via www.meetupcom. with meetings taking place all over the world on the second Tuesday of the month) and actually exchanging books with some of the folk there. Still, one particularly prolific participant tells me that she is slowly but surely emptying six boxes of books she received from a car boot sale around the streets of Glasgow. so there's hope yet.

DAY 38

Members 279,155 Books registered 6 Books caught 2 (sort of)

Good karma Medium Just as I'm beginning to conclude that my books are being picked up by people without internet access, swiped by street sweepers or possibly eaten I notice that someone else's released book is successfully found in a

phone box on Edinburgh's High Street. The finder has never heard of the site before but journals that she thinks book crossing is a great idea and she will keep doing it. Good for her. The bitch. Despite a dash to the steps of the Concert Hall in search of six books and nearly hunting a book released by my own flatmate in error. I have not yet caught a book.

DAY 42

Members 280,318 Books registered 6 Books caught 3

Good karma getting warmer

Did anyone truly think this through? Do the words needle and haystack mean anything? On the other hand. one of my releases. Alan Spence's Glasgow Zen, is journalled for a second time after being passed on at another meetup. giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

DAY 80

Members 285,794 Books registered 8 Books caught 3

Good karma grrrrrr In a last ditch effort for a true catch as opposed to a pass on at a meetup. l prop a copy of Hey Nostradamus! by Douglas Coupland against a bench in the Botanical Gardens, retreat to a safe distance David Bellamy-style and watch. Now come on lady. I saw you take it and read my note so why not journal it?
