BARONY BAR

81-85 Broughton Street Edinburgh

Nestled on possibly the coolest wee street in the whole of the capital, the Barony Bar is the perfect example of a simple, old school bar with buckets of charm. The decor of the small L-shaped room is classin traditional, with tiled walls, large brewery mirrors hanging everywhere and dark wood furniture and fittings from the large glass frontage to the real fire at the back. More laid back than some of Broughton Street's other watering holes, the Barony's relaxed vibe makes it just as much of a good spot for a bit of lunch during the day as for a few quality ales at night.

The bar has plenty to choose from in the way of drinks, especially for the beer lover, with around a dozen guest ales on offer at any one time alongside the regular cask staples, as well as an array of bottled beers from around the world. Throw in an excellent modern wine list, a quality range of single malt whiskies and traditionally hearty pub scran served until 10pm every night at a decent price, and you've got a pub that's got a little of everything to keep just about every punter happy. Things inevitably hot up at the weekends and in the evenings, but the relaxed nature of the place somehow remains in place, thanks in part to some ridiculously cheery staff. Suitably chilled live music turns up on Sundays, perfect for those hungover days, but whenever you go the atmosphere is one of laid back cool with no pretensions.
