‘lt’s all highlights,’ says Peter Hamblin, the Usher Hall’s artistic and education programmer, when asked if there is something of particular note in the hall’s third season of International Classics. And a look through the programme brochure endorses Hamblin’s view. Household names such as Kiri Te Kanawa and Nigel Kennedy are there, as are weighty world orchestras, including, for the first time, the Warsaw Philharmonic, who haven’t been to Scotland in over ten years. ‘This one actually is very special as the orchestra is using the recently restored Usher Hall organ for Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony, with John Kitchen, our own city organist,
as soloist,’ says Hamblin.
Programmes, particularly the orchestral ones, are unashamedly populist but designed in such a way as to let audiences try out different styles of classical concerts. ‘There is a full series of organ recitals as well as four world orchestras, solo artist spectaculars, including James Galway playing Mozart and more intimate celebrity recitals by the great pianist Angela Hewitt and the Mandelring String Quartet,’ he adds.
Ticket deals are designed to entice too - the best one for families being that kids can go free, so taking them for a first taste of the symphonic wonders of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Rachmaninov et at will not end up
costing a fortune.
‘We want the Usher Hall to be seen as a promoter in its own right, as well as a hire venue,’ says Hamblin. ‘We are not in competition with the RSNO or the $00 but what we are doing is more in terms of continuing the international orchestral aspect of the festival. All of the world orchestras are special in a sense and, indeed, all of the concerts in the season will be
