In a notoriously erratic career, filmmaker Robert Altman’s spoof documentary Tanner ‘88 — which tracked an idealistic Democratic Presidential candidate’s stuttering crusade — remains an unreserved humdinger. Sixteen years on, as a rather stiffer, patrician Democratic congressman vies for the keys to the White House in competition with a folksy member of the Bush clan, Altman and his cast from the original mini-series have reunited for a timely re-examination of that earlier fictional campaign and its aftermath.
The opening couple of episodes follow Jack Tanner’s daughter Alex (Cynthia Nixon) as she builds up to a screening of her film about Tanner’s failed candidature, her every move documented by one of her own film students. Following a dismal reception at the Rough Cut Festival and some honest appraisal from Robert Redford, Alex sets out to make an entirely different film, this time about what it takes to run for office and win.
