Just look at her press shots, all of which reveal the London lass as looking rather worryingly like the fresh-faced, pre-booze and attitood Charlotte Church. Humoroust enough, she’s also been known to pose with a pack of Benson & Hedges‘ budget brand of black-clad Sovereign tabs, possibly with one eye on sponsorship (or maybe not). It's fair to say that our listings aren’t exactly clogged up with modern burlesque clubs. That’s why Club Noir, at the Carling Academy, is something worth checking out. Ian Single and Tina Warren, the people behind the night, have chosen to take on this notoriously difficult club venue, and theirs is the best effort yet at turning this outsized hall into a going nightlife concern.
The great thing about Club Noir is that it is attracting a considerable crowd without ever compromising its remit. It’s a classy but fun modern Burlesque, as Single points out: ‘This isn‘t a gynaecological journey. Our fetish acts are saucy rather than hardcore S&M, which isn’t what we’re into. One of the fetish shows is a parody of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and I personally find that more sensuous than silly stuff like spanking bottoms and the like. We

So far so palatable, but how do the musical considerations concur with what is surely a fringe clubbing experience for those who have acquired the taste? Single explains: ‘The music that we play is definitely dance, but not just modern dance. At the same time, we don't want the club to be like a museum, with the lnkspots playing all night. There’s quite a lot of crime scene jazz and swing.‘
Single also points out his most cherished part of the Club Noir experience: ‘My favourite thing about the club is the amount of effort that people put into getting dressed up at it. The girls look amazing, they really do. One guy came on his birthday, dressed as a birthday cake, which was marvellous.‘
