POLE DANCING LESSONS Ego. Edinburgh. Tue 9 Nov. 7pm.
If there could be anything more bizarre than going to a pole dancing lesson on a Tuesday evening, it would be trying it out for the first time with no music. This was a mere technical glitch at our first Polestars session. but it made the experience of attending an exercise class in Ego's Cocteau Lounge even more surreal. Pretty soon it became clear that the session wasn‘t really about getting fit. as the instructor informed us there was an ashtray in the corner for anyone who wanted to smoke and a bar next door if we fancied a glass of wine.
The emphasis of the evening is not so much on exercise as having a laugh and. apparently, feeling a little sexy (although some might find this difficult wearing a combination of shorts and high heels). A spot of music would have created a saucier atmosphere. but there was no shortage of giggles as we twisted our legs and arms around the pole in a poor imitation of our instructor‘s demonstration. And although sharing a pole with three or four other girls might sound a bit daunting. it gives the opportunity to compare notes and take a much needed rest in between moves. For while the course doesn‘t offer much of a cardio workout. it requires a great deal of upper-body strength, co-ordination and skin like leather as the combination of metal pole
