Remember the interview with Dennis Potter when he was dying and high on morphine? He described looking out of his bedroom window and seeing cherry blossom on the tree below. It was as bright and blossomy as he had ever known it. Something of Potter’s urgency and vital perception shapes the narrative of Sophie’s World author Jostein Gaarder's new work. It's a simple tale, but the 151 pages are testament to a tender and impassioned

call to life.

Georg’s dad died when he was four. He’s been brought up by his mum and step-dad Jorgen and is going along like most 15-year-olds until a huge long-lost letter is discovered in the material of his old push-chair. The letter was written by his dad shortly before his own death, intended for reading by his son some years later. On one level, it‘s quite simply heartbreaking. The father telling the mysterious and exhilarating story of how he met and fell in love with Georg‘s mother and how Georg was born with all their joy and wonder. The delight in writing the tale cracks with increasing sorrow at the knowledge that such life is soon to be stolen away. The father will not see his beloved son grow up.

But by juxtaposing various perspectives, Gaarder at no point lets the book become sentimental or nostalgic. The messages are clear but never preachy: love the little things, love the big, wondrous big skies and love your precious ones. But let go too, for life goes on. (Ruth Hedges)
