In an age of interchangeable worthy television star vehicles, writer Russell T Davies has provided some of the sparkier, more original recent small screen offerings. Most prominently (and controversially) known for gay- themed dramas Bob and Rose and Queer As Folk, you feel only a writer of his brassnecked cheek could have successfully pulled off a script detailing the return to Earth of the Messiah: the premise of The Second Coming.
As we await his contribution to the forthcoming Dr Who resurrection, Davies has dashed off Mine All Mine — a light homage to his Swansea upbringing — in the process breathing life into the flagging careers of a brace of well known light entertainment figures. Griff Rhys Jones gets to
do a bit of acting once more as Max Vivaldi, an eccentric family man, who’ll
bore anyone kind enough to listen with his tall story of an ancient will
which decrees the Vivaldis rightful owners of the whole of Swansea. Events
take a turn for the deeply silly when a visiting auctioneer accidentally authenticates the will, making Max the Lord and Master of the Welsh
seaside town.
Yes. it’s as daft and warm-hearted as you might imagine, with some memorable lines in amongst all the sound and fury. The piece is brought
hilariously to life in a couple of scenes by Hi-de-Hi star Ruth Madoc, whose
performance as Max’s tell-it-as-she-sees-it mother-in-law Myrtle makes you wonder where she’s been all these years. ‘My life has been a string of
disappointments,’ she grouses at one point, ‘like a plastic necklace’.
