With its cozy environs and large open coal fire, Cottier's is the quintessential winter bar, and for its regulars it's more of an old friend than one of the West End's most trendy venues. The fact that the building, a 19th century Dowanhill church, gives off no hint of Presbyterian austerity is testament to the laid-back atmosphere that the Cottier's staff and clientele generate.
It is situated in one of those bower-like pockets of the urban West End, virtually indistinguishable from grand, upmarket tenements surrounding it, almost merging with the neighbourhood's ubiquitous trees. Although mere minutes from the frantic hub of Byres Road, one would be forgiven for feeling removed from modern life altogether, such is Cottier's relaxed climate.
The drinkers are serviced by a welcoming, open ground-level bar and one of Glasgow's most charming beer gardens. Although in the winter months, an outside session is a bit unlikely, the place is swarming come the propitious winds of July.
It's a drinker's bar, with real beers and a sufficient wine list catering for a crowd that is comprised of young professionals, artists and playwrights on the make and the small number of students who make Cottier's their home, term after term. Aside from the neighbourhood Cottier's aficionados, most of the place's passing trade is generated by the venue's other two going concerns - the theatre and the restaurant. All three facets of Cottier's contribute to its glowing reputation, and the diversity of the space feeds the bar crowd. On any given evening, expect to meet the audience, performers and directors of the gig, play or art installation of the night loitering in this wonderful bar.
