Despite the seasonal rush of excitement taking over the nation, not everyone‘s getting into the spirit of things — a fact not lost on Katie Fuller. 'l was talking to a girl who is over from Israel and she was saying it's just overwhelming here. You can’t get away from Christmas. Everything is decorated for Christmas and there‘s Christmas music everywhere. I think it
can be quite marginalising in that way.‘
Fuller is organiser of the Festivals of Light, a season of events inspired by the cultural traditions of Glasgow‘s diverse ethnic communities which includes, but isn‘t limited to, Christmas. Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Jews also celebrate major festivals at this time of year, yet the traditions of events such as Diwali, Eid ul-Fitr and Chanukah have a more limited public outlet. This festival seeks to redress the balance, and the Hidden Gardens are the ideal location, as Fuller explains. “The whole concept and design behind the gardens was about being a very inclusive space that could offer something to everybody and be representative of the surrounding
communities.‘
80 while a lighting installation will be marking the passage of advent, there will be a public Chanukah lighting accompanied by the Glasgow Jewish Choral Society on Tuesday 14 December. And an event inspired by Eid, on Sunday 21 November, will feature indoor performance and poetry
as well as free food and a bazaar.
First up though, Diwali is represented on Saturday 20 November. With lighting installations and fireworks outside, the entertainment inside will include Nachaar, who combine Scottish and Asian instruments, and the Indian Music and Dance Collective, who will be showcasing Kathak and Bharata Natyam dances. Dana Macleod, co-ordinator for the Collective, is neither Hindu nor Sikh herself but doesn’t see that as a barrier to enjoying the event. ‘Diwali is such a lovely festival and everyone can join in and
