It's difficult to know who to worry about most with My Cat Hates You. Is it the publishers for thinking we need a collection of captioned, monochrome photos of evil bastard-looking cats? Or is it compiler Jim Edgar, who has gone to the trouble of collating this peculiar tome? Or is it the thousands of pet owners who happily submit their feline companion’s portraits to Edgar’s website?
To be honest, it’s the cats I worry about. The humans may be the product of twisted, fetishistic minds but the nasty scowls on the faces of these felines can only be their own home-grown malevolence. If they do hate us - and for the most part they clearly do - this little zoological study should raise questions about why we keep these satanic beasts.
Bunny suicides are always something close to everyone‘s heart and it would surely be hard to find a child whose little face wouldn't light up on Christmas morn like the lass from the Terry‘s All Gold ad when presented with this in their stocking. Some of these peggings are so innovative and spectacular they could inspire future physics research. Mostly, however, they are just wonderfully gory, from squaring up to the beast from Aliens with a peashooter, to being spliced, diced, chopped, mashed, crushed and blended using a variety of everyday objects and devices.
Yes, this is sick and yes, this is funny; but the degree of ingenuity in Andy Riley‘s set-ups mean you almost excuse him of preying on the insecurities of rabbits with deathwishes. Almost. (Mark Robertson)
