.l/‘*. '/' THE BAD PLUS Queen's Hall. Edinburgh, Sun 5 Dec

Love them or loathe them, there is no getting away from the fact that the Bad Plus have brought an energising blast of controversy and fresh thinking to a contemporary jazz scene that has been largely dominated by a ‘retro’ mentality. The trio of pianist Ethan lverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King first launched in 2000, but the players (all originally from the midwestern United States) knew each other long before that.

They brought their off-the-wall mixture of sonic mayhem, genuine musical depth and comic book humour to Scotland for the first time at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival in 2002, and returned last year. The inclusion of radically deconstructed versions of songs such as Neil Young‘s ‘After the Goldrush' and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was one of the things that marked them out as iconoclasts in the jazz marketplace.

This slick, lean young bullyboy brings together hip hop and techno in a way-cool, hypnotic glitchfest. His current mini-album, Bounce, Make, Model, opens with the proposition ‘I Wanna be Your STD’, perhaps a sentiment harking back to his days as a strip club DJ?
