BABES IN THE WOOD COO Carnegie Hall. Dunfermline, until Sun 26 Dec

The Pitch Tony The Steamie Roper writes and directs the story of two weans and their wicked uncle, determined to do them in to claim their inheritance. Blending the Robin Hood story with traditional folklore, Roper further muddies the waters by setting it (ostensibly) in the reign of Richard the Lionheart.

The Verdict Although seen early in its run, this still felt very rough, and a trifle under-rehearsed. Roper’s script is alternately too poor for panto, and too good for it, with reams of punning wordplay that go way over the heads of the audience, whose enjoyment seemed somewhat forced. Younger members were restless at times. Johnny McKnight is the audience‘s clear favourite with his ad-Iibbing and camp driving force as half of the dumb robber double- act, but it's all a bit too wholesome for its own good. Fun, but not fun enough by far. (Gareth Davies)
