CHOOSE LIFE

Are you really making the most of your evenings? If not, then now is the time to enrol in a course or night class

It’s that time of year when you wake up most mornings with a thudding head and the sense that it will never get light again. But in the depths of these dark, dark days lurk the seeds of something much better. Once the sun has started to return, the first courses of the New Year will begin, and if you want to make sure you book your place in time, best do it from the murk of the pre-Christmas fug.

There are some truly amazing things to be done in Glasgow or Edinburgh on a typical weekday evening. Barry Shelby, our Eat & Drink editor, tried his hand at a sculp- ture course at Glasgow School of Art. ‘I wanted to cast a sculpture, despite my terrible lack of confidence,’ he says. “But the teacher was having none of my nerves. OK then. Of course, my reaction at the end of the evening was elation, and l carefully wrapped up my creation and took it home.’ Meanwhile Fiona Shepherd. The List's rock music writer, studied salsa dancing at Cuba Norte. ‘Salsa is about getting up close and personal so everyone partners up,‘ she explains. ‘It gave moshing to Jane’s Addiction 3 whole new meaning.’ Here, in the first of two parts, we present a selection of fine courses and evening classes available across the central belt.
