CLUBS OF THE YEAR

Clubs Editor Henry Northmore takes us through what’s kept the dancef/oors packed over the last 72 months.

It's been a funny old year lll clubs. broadsheets are still saying dance music/clubt)rng is dead. yet the wealth of underground clubs bubbling under and big events in Scotland have shown the people don't agree wrth this ‘tact' in the slightest.

One of the most exciting things has been the re—rnvigoratron of the underground scene the desire to twrst things up. taking the clubbing format with a skewed sense of humour. Live music is re— entering the club world and nights like Deztthkillmxltl. Saltlick. Abnormals Anonymous. Dfrnt Drum. STET and many more while having varying music policies have definitely helped take things in new directions, celebrating local talent as well as the best live acts around.

Perhaps Our favourite innovators ot the year were Club Noir and their saucy burlesque night. The team behind this, Tina Warren (picturedl and Ian Single, have taken their concept and run with ll and created one of Scotland's most unique clubbing expenences.

Though that's not to say the big names haven‘t had a great year as well. Clubs like Inside Out are consistently sold out. and Colours (reaching their tenth birthday on 5 February. 2005. wrth John Digweed lined up) had perhaps their most Successful Colourstest yet in 200-4 wrth a diverse line-up to date with names like Green Velvet added to the big name housey mix. We have really high hopes for their 2005 date (4 June) it they keep this up.

Similarly Slam have been gorng great guns at Pressure. but again it was their big date at T in the Park and the Slam Tent which had the biggest names (including Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx). The biggest disappomtment was that it was so damn popular you couldn't actually get in the tent.
