CHILDREN'S MOVIE PREVIEW

There was a time for each and every one of us when kiddies’ movies were the

best. These feelings have more to do with sentimentality and self delusion than they do with any kind of reality. For me it was the seasonal television reruns of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Incredible Journey, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Dumbo and The Aristocats that stole my heart. I believed there was basically nothing made for kids after 1980 that was any good. Occasionally l recanted this belief but for every Babe, Toy Story, Spirited Away and Holes there would arrive a Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Scooby 000 (the movie) or Home on the Range to settle my argument.

The truth is that children who love movies care about what hits them on

both a gut and a cerebral level, and from my experience of observing children

observing films, they respond most strongly to three key things: - nightmarish Hogarthian distortion (the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), eerie, surrealistic imagery (Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast is a must for any child who can read subtitles) and most importantly ‘identity and wish fulfilment' (there is no better example than ET).

With these simplistic, highly arguable equations in mind it has to be said that 2005 is going to be a bumper year for the quality kiddie flick, so parents should buy that year pass now. Starting this month there’s Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, based on Daniel Handler’s series of bizarre series of books narrated by the titular character. This spooky expressionistic tale of three bright bereaved kids who get taken for a ride by their wicked uncle Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) will disturb and enthral kids of all ages. Things just get better in the New Year. For very young weirdos there’s Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie (Feb) and the self explanatory Son of Mask (without Carrey this time). But best of all, come March there's Danny Boyle and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce’s superb Millions - a north western tale of two boys who find a loot of UK pounds ten days before the Euro comes in.

Beyond the blockbuster joys of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Nov), there’s Terry Gilliam’s The Brothers Grimm (Mar), and for mums and kids there‘s the Johnny Depp vehicle Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton. To end the year with a bang, the first of the Chronicles of Narnia - crypto fundamentalist Christian fantasies will have never been more enticing to the thinking child cineaste. (Paul Dale)
