HAVING A GO AT GAELIC

Robin Hodge wanted to learn more about Gaeldom and its language, so he signed up for an evening course

I’d always meant to try and learn some Gaelic. My father had a few phrases he’d picked up as a child and the sound and rhythms of the language echoed beguilingly in my mind after I'd heard Sorley Maclean reading Hallaig in the 805.

So I signed up for an evening class at Edinburgh University. We were a group of fifteen, mostly beginners like me, but some had studied a little before. There was a wide range of ages, backgrounds and motivations round the room some full time students at the university, two who needed to learn Gaelic for their work, some retired folk keen to put their new found spare time to good use and others who walked and climbed the mountains like Beinn Dearg Mhor and wondered what the

names all signified.

We began with the simple basics, learning how to say good evening (Feasgar math), how to introduce ourselves to each other (Is mise Robin), ask and answer basic questions (Go as a l tha thu?). The classes were conducted as much as possible in l Gaelic, steadily building vocabulary and leading us gently through to an understanding of the grammar. Each session always concluded on an upbeat note with a song encouraging us to get our ears and tongues atuned to the music and poetry that is so strong a part of Gaelic culture.

As with all study, the more effort you put in then the more you’ll get out. The quality of the teaching was excellent and there is such a wide choice of subjects available for us to study in Glasgow and in Edinburgh that there is something to

inspire almost everyone. Slainte!
