Time was when '25 stand-by tickets were the status quo. Spontaneity was key. Theatre lovers could pop in for a matinee or wander in post-work to wind down, at a fraction of the price. Financial revolutions of the last decade have resulted in the sad demise of such frivolities. But there are still bargains to be had. They simply come in a different guise.

In Glasgow, the Tron often has cheaper prices for previews or opening nights. Some of the shows, including this month’s Knives and Hens, operate on a ‘first 100 tickets for 25’ basis on a Friday. Across town at the King’s, check out the concessions Monday to Thursday on the top three price bands, as well as their ‘book for three shows save £3 per ticket, ‘book for four shows save £4 per ticket' policy. At the Citizen’s the real winner is the ‘pay what you can preview’, where tickets are free for the night before the show officially begins its run. Theatre-goers are simply asked to make a charity donation. At the Theatre Royal, concession rates apply to almost all shows.

Across in the capital, things are equally fruitful. The Traverse has a range of concessions on every show and apex tickets for certain performances. Take a little piece of the theatre home with you, with their play scripts, starting at £2.50. Neighbour the Royal Lyceum has a free preview for every production in the season, while students are welcome at half price. The Festival and King’s theatres often have savings on opening nights and matinees. Friends of Festival City Theatres qualify for special rates (see www.eft.co.uk).

A little further from home, Dundee Rep offers £5 preview nights on all Rep productions: enjoy. (Anna Millar)
