He may balk at foolish royals and Britain’s loss of innocence but when it comes down to it, VERNON KAY is just in it for the footwear.

What’s the most rock’n’roll thing you’ve done today?

I got out of bed.

Which time in history would you have loved to have lived? And why?

During World War II. because I think in Great Britain there was sense of camaraderie around the country. which has been lost. for one reason or another. People do not tend to speak to their next door neighbour any more: they do not leave the back door open any more. Back when people were one and not individuals. People talking to each other. which I think is gone unfortunately. part of this is because we have gone a bit too PC. Your house is on fire, loved ones and pets are safe, you have a chance to go and retrieve one thing, what would it be?

My record collection because it cost me a fortune and it kind of reflects who I am and it’s the greatest records I have ever been into. I have got some really hardcore punk records.

Tell us the punchline to your favourite joke? His underpants fit like a glove.

What, if anything, is too serious to joke about?

Death and destruction. It‘s in the papers today. Prince Harry in his costume. He seems to be a bit confused on that front. I think he has his granddad's brains. So I think in a way. definitely anything that has caused a lot of grief to any families. I think Harry was wrong to wear that fancy dress costume. Imagine being the Queen, she's got to go to Auschwitz for a ceremony and her grandson is walking about with a swastika armband. One thing that is interesting is the tsunami disaster. Have you heard a tsunami joke? There are none going. No one has told me or sent me anything silly about the tsunami disaster. because it is just shocking.

on the televrsion.'
