Learning to scuba dive and bake plum tarts. Daniel Kitson's recent four month sabbatical could be dismissed as self-indulgent laziness. Jesus only needed 40 days and nights before the performing itch reclaimed Him. And His critics real/y crucified Him. But publicity-shy and people-allergic as Kitson can be, he needs space to dream it all up again. Liable to savage the hand that strokes him - calling Peter Kay ‘a cunt‘ for example — the Perrier Award’s hairiest ever winner is still the UK‘s cleverest misanthrope. Bar none, Jimmy Carr.
Despite being a tempermentalist who marked his comeback with a fit of plate smashing, he does possess a lovely, cuddly side, performing last- minute tsunami benefits and having whip rounds to send audience members to Bilbao. Which beats Coventry, if you piss him off. But probably beats it anyway. So after the mixed bag of Fringe reviews (‘ill-prepared, ill- judged, ill-tempered’ c/o The List) and after the evocative stories of adolescent dancing and his kids TV show about a racist penis not getting commissioned, why not catch this reluctant prophet in his preparation for the Glasgow and Melbourne comedy festivals?
Doing more storytelling and undoubtedly referring to his notebook constantly, it’ll probably be a rambling work in progress. But there should be enough inspired ad libs and hilarious deviance to ensure the swelling of his disciples’ ranks once more. (Jay Richardson)
