A film about a paraplegic man fighting for the right to a dignified death might sound like a gloomy prospect, but Javier Bardem’s extraordinary performance lights up every corner of this inspiring real-life story. Attended by his self-sacrificing sister-in-law, grumpy older brother, young nephew and confused father, ex-ship’s engineer Rambn Sampedro has spent nearly 30 years confined to his bed. The interest of beautiful, cerebral and terminally afflicted lawyer Julia (Belén Rueda), with whom Ramén falls in love, leads to a groundbreaking court case, a flurry of media interest and the publication of a collection of poems. It also offers a welcome release for his imprisoned mind. But it is his warm, sometimes spiky relationship with working-class single mother and local radio DJ Rosa (Lola Duefias) that ultimately promises true release.

Since Alejandro Amenabar (Open Your Eyes, The Others) served as director, co-producer, co-writer, editor and composer, he must be responsible for most of the film’s strengths and weaknesses. The former include his sympathetic handling of the actors, who were encouraged to improvise around a loose script, plus some skilfully deployed flights of fantasy in which the bed-bound man soars over the beautiful Galician countryside towards the deep blue waves and seething white foam of the nearby beach, where he broke his neck in a diving accident. The latter includes the creation of composite characters, which all too schematically represent different aspects of Ramdn's predicament, plus an overwrought score, which often tends towards the manipulative.

That said, there is much to admire and enjoy here, not least of all the triumph of the hunky, healthy looking 35-year-old Javier Bardem playing a wasted, bald-headed, pasty-skinned man 20 years his senior. He invests this role with so much subtle emotion and edgy humour that we seldom feel pity for a man whose autobiography was tellingly entitled Letters from Hell. (Nigel Floyd)
