A new magazine from the publishers of The List sets out to celebrate the international importance of contemporary art fioancofland.Nkfl<Baney introduces MAP.

t‘s been l8 months in development. and now Scotland’s new contemporary art magazine is ready for launch. Map. published quarterly.

aims to acknowledge the international nature of

contemporary art. Although it is published in Scotland. the magazine will highlight the ever- increasing links between artistic practice in this country and the rest of the world. One leading Scottish artist told me that over l5 years ago. when he was still at Glasgow School of Art. a lecture by the legendary American modernist Donald Judd at the college had a seminal influence on him and his contemporaries. encouraging many of them to pursue a dialogue with modernism that has remained a key feature of art emerging from Scotland in the past decade. During that time the art scene has become ever more globalised. with artists such as Douglas

Gordon and Simon Starling spending much of

their time living outside Scotland. Other key players. such as Glasgow-based Hanneline

The first issue ol .tlup reflects this widely- distributed community: its cover l‘eatures the Mexico-based artist lirancis Alys. whose exhibition forms a highlight of the new international (ilasgow art festival. The issue also includes a diary of Beagles and Ramsay's recent installation at New York‘s PS I. a discussion with Nathan (‘oley about his new work ‘Jerusalem Syndrome'. and a review of the Sao Paulo biennale. Equally. it looks at art practice located physically or conceptually in Scotland. including the renaissance of artist-run spaces throughout the country. and at Graham Fagen's exploration of Scottish identity in collaboration with dub artist Adrian Sherwood.

Map is part funded by the Scottish Arts Council, and the first issue will be published on Monday 28 February.

Writer and editor Alice Bain worked at the CCA back when it was the Third Fde Centre. and was art editor of [he list belore taking over as editor in ititit). She has also been an arts writer for a number of national newspapers, most recently for Me Guardian .

Deputy editor: Ruth Hedges

Also art editor of flie List, Ruth Hedges was prewously editorial assistant at the Burlington Magazine in London. She has written for various art iriaga/ines including Modern Painters and Circa. This year she was nominated for the Writer of the Year prize at the PPA Awards.

Contributing editor: Barry Schwabsky

Londonbased critic Schwabsky is also a contributing editor for New York's Artie/urn magazine. He has been writing on contemporary art for more than 20 years. Art directors: Frost Design, London Acclaimed designer Vince Frost first came to prominence in the mid-1990s with his award-winning covers of The Independent Magazine and cult zine Big. More recently, Frost's team won plaudits from the prestigious Type Directors Club of New York for their work on the acclaimed literary magazine Zemb/a. Vince Frost moved to Australia in 2002. but he continues to work with his London team.

Designer: Matthew Ball Edinburgh-based Matthew Ball was a designer on US magazine Rolling Stone in New York until last year. He moved to Scotland in 2004 and is currently setting up a design consultancy. www.themapmagazine.com
