I just stumbled across Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet in a Minneapolis record shop. I didn’t have anything to read and I walked in and it wasn‘t this issue, it was a different issue, with a really strange cover and I started picking it up and it’s all written like this, in bits, so it’s quite easy to pick up and just read and I’ve never read anything like it in my life before.
He was totally underappreciated and never published a book in his lifetime. He died a depressed office clerk and this book was discovered in a chest after he died. It was just loads of bits of paper and no one had any idea what order to put them in. There's this note in the introduction that says you can never really read it as he intended, because no one is really sure how it was supposed to be read. It’s just hundreds of tiny fragments, so you can really delve into it. It’s so sad but so wise at the same time. It’s not like a novel, it’s basically a man who got to face this sort of tragic existence where no one cares about him. It‘s nihilistic and existential in the way that he doubts and questions his whole purpose and everything that he does but it‘s actually kind of beautiful the way he writes.
When I finished it I’d never read anything like it before and started it again. I always carry a copy round with me wherever I go because it’s one of these things that you can just pick up and delve into at any point.
