KAZOO The Barfly, Glasgow, Sat 19 Feb

The London press has been talking about Glasgow as the UK‘s hottest music city for the past 16 months. What‘s rarely mentioned, however, is the fact that the city’s clubs are the breeding grounds for the bands putting Glasgow on the musical map.

Kazoo was the city‘s archetypal guitar music club, established long before critical favour turned its fickle gaze on the Glasgow scene. Founded by Jim Byrne in 1992, the club was taken over by some guy called Alex Kapranos about six months after its inception. Byrne says: ‘I started Kazoo, but Alex took it over and made it into this cool, underground, famous club. He was in a band called Blisters at the time. It’s important to note that without him we wouldn't be discussing Kazoo now.’

Belle & Sebastian played one of their earliest gigs there, as did Urusei Yatsura. The old Kazoo was a place where musicians and scenesters could mix, share demos and put the word out about their own gigs and releases. Byrne is keen to recreate an atmosphere of communal creativity: ‘How do you get all of the good musicians and bands in Glasgow together in one space? Well, one way is to play the demos of the bands that might be appearing there. to let them know that you’re supporting them. This way, they‘ll come to the club to see what their music sounds like over a good PA system.‘ It's not often that a DJ set will incorporate demos, but then this club is all about giving exposure to nascent talent.

The Kazoo is a DIY instrument. Anyone can use it to make a remarkable sound. Let‘s hope Glasgow‘s bands employ the club in a similar way.
