Strictly speaking, Scottish Opera‘s newest addition to its repertoire is not an opera. Handel's Semele is an oratorio. the term usually reserved for choral music that is not intended to be staged. such as the same composer's more frequently heard Messiah. Musically. the two have much in common - delightful arias ('Where‘er you Walk‘ is from Semele) and some glorious melodies for the chorus - but the secular drama of the vain Princess Semele and her love for Jupiter just calls out to be staged.
'The text ranks among the best of English librettos.‘ explains director John La Bouchardiere. 'But it‘s not like Messiah. Samson or other Handel oratorios we know. It's dramatic rather than allegorical. so really requires dramatic effect.‘ In it. Juno. wife of Jupiter, king of the gods. is not best pleased that he has taken up with the mortal Semele. She contrives for her husband to appear in all his full, radiant glory. the lightning from which results in Semele being burnt to a cinder. ‘There are good things and difficult things about staging Semele.” says La Bouchardiere. ‘At one point, for instance, we have just one and a half seconds to get the whole chorus off stage.‘ The question of how he does it is met simply with ‘l cheated. I used a scenic device because that's what the opera requires.‘
Such flexibility is essential in staging Semele. La Bouchardiere is especially pleased with the cast he has to work with on it. the title role in this new production being sung by the Scottish soprano and former company principal, Lisa Milne. ‘lt‘s a magical piece.‘ he says, ‘and we are all working together to set the scene of clouds. chariots, and general visual
