Fri 4 Mar This fortnight sees a meeting of the minds as jazz cats Departure Lounge and Big Beat cross streams for the launch of their new club night Four Corners. ‘The accent will be on live music; that will form very much a focus of any actual night with DJs tailored around about that,‘ explains Mr Big Beat Simon Hodge, one of the organisers of the new bi-monthly night. ‘What we want is a club that represents music that's informed by jazz. soul and funk, and by the global rhythms as well, but in a very modern idiom. This isn‘t a music that should stay still, it should always be moving forward.‘ For their first night Four Corners have invited the new and improved New Mastersounds. Having performed previously in Edinburgh as a big funk band, they now boast a leaner, meaner four-piece set-up with a

predilection for cutting edge, direct and expressive jazz-funk.
‘I liked the fact that you had a very big wall of sound,‘
says Hodge of the New Mastersounds‘ earlier line-up. ‘It was very nice and brassy and had a huge impact. But if you have a big band it necessitates a fairly tight regime and doesn‘t leave an awful lot of room for expression within that. Now they‘re a quartet it allows them to set a groove and then just ride it - there‘s far more improvisation than what they used to do and there‘s far more excitement.‘
It is in this new arrangement that the band have been invited on tour with the legendary Lou Donaldson, and recorded with the likes of Mr Scruff, John Arnold and Amp Fiddler. So those fit to get high on a heady cocktail of good vibes, liveness and DJs should get on down to Four Corners this Friday and, well, get on down. (Mark Edmundson)
