TWO OR THREE THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER (15) 95min :Noux'eaux l) "trues. DVD retari .0...

One thing we should always keep in mind when watching the great, French New Wave director’s work is that he makes films while most other filmmakers illustrate stories. You just need to look at the way Jean-Luc Godard will not just film a joke, but make part of the joke lie in the actual filming, or the way he’ll take a cinema convention and humorously subvert it. Watch how, in Masculin Fe'minin, he'll have his central character, played by Jean-Pierre Leaud, constantly leaving the screen space and getting it into a conversation without Godard choosing to show exactly where he‘s gone. Then there is the scene in which Leaud meets up with his girlfriend for an important chat, but the characters find the conversations going on around them no less important and Godard’s camera tracks and pans away from the protagonists and follows these other discussions. Most films will have a bit of background noise to suggest verisimilitude, but Godard is perverser happy to allow it to become foregrounded. In this look at an ex-army recruit who takes up with a budding pop singer, the story is hardly the thing.

Vivre sa Vie has, by Godard‘s standards, a strong narrative, with the lovely Anna Karina (Godard‘s wife) caught in the world of Parisian prostitution, but again it is the style that matters. Whether having Karina looking directly into the camera, or Karina interviewing the actual philosopher Brice Parain about values and identity, Godard reminds us that we are watching a film by combining fact with fiction, and filming the process with a full awareness that we're not in a closed-off, narrative-driven world.

It’s this essayistic quality that is especially relevant to Two or Three Things I Know About Her, in which the her of the title isn’t Marina Vlady‘s prostitute, this time working out in the Parisian suburbs, but Paris itself. ls Godard the most inventive, most important filmmaker in cinema history? As a critic once said, most filmmakers work off five per cent of their brain capacity; Godard works off 90%. Extras include a Godard booklet in each DVD. (Tony McKibbin)
