THE GAY TODAY It's 40 years since the first gay rights march - in Philadelphia, since you ask — but Gareth Davies argues that the time for militant activism is now over.
Well, it’s official. Glasgow is one of the gayest places in the world, according to a recent report. Until now, the only notable destinations on the gay globe were San Francisco, L Frank Baum's Oz and the Isle of Lesbos. But finally the steel-girdered, hard-man facade of Scotland‘s second city has fallen to the feather boa and Kylie brigade. It’s what the Clydesiders of yore fought for.
80 life, most would agree, is pretty good in Scotland for the gay today, and it’s getting better all the time. I’m as keen on equality as the next man, woman, child, or other, please specify, but favour the more discreet, softly- softly approach, the one which doesn’t frighten the hetties with tub-thumping
slogans and militant antagonism.
We've moved on from having to work to demystify our lives - even my pre- Wolfenden mother is no longer amazed that my straight male friends don’t live in fear of me trying to touch their genitals. Being gay is no longer a novelty, except to Daily Mail readers. In terms of the arts, gay directors don’t only produce gay films, gay actors aren’t generally stereotyped in gay roles, and even mainstream pop artists have realised they can be openly gay without fear of damage to their careers. The biggest moans some have is that Rupert Everett may never play James Bond. Well, big deal. Get over it. I know it’s about principles, but honestly, ye’ll gie yirsel’ an ulcer, hen.
I’m thankful there were people in the past to fight for the rights we’ve claimed so far, but it’s not a battle any more. The best way to continue the progression over inequality now is not to make an issue of it. Quiet pride and discreet determinism are the tools by which our lives are being improved here, today. Of course there’s a long way to go, and most of us probably won't be here to take advantage of our full rights when they are finally, begrudgingly awarded to us, but then we’re not the worst off in the world.
So be content to give a loud whoopee, treat yourself to a cheap day return, and cross Britain's pinkest, fluffiest city off your list of things to see, people to do. Even if you’re not a friend of Dorothy’s, Glasgow has plenty to offer.

Men will be able to ask questions, request information, advice and chat about a range of HIV/sexual health issues and more on Gaydar, one of the world's most popular contact/dating websites. James Falconer of Gay Men’s Health says: ‘Gay men tell us they are not getting the information they need when they need it. This chat room provides a forum for men to talk and ask questions while having information, advice and support delivered to them by trained peer educators’.
