Edinburgh, Fri 8 Apr

Stravinksy‘s ballet music The Rite of Spring is almost a hundred years old, yet still retains an exceptional ability to startle the listener with the primal energy of its rhythms and unusual orchestral colours. Its first audiences in Paris found it so shocking that they shouted it down. Future use in Disney‘s Fantasia brought The Rite of Spring to a wider audience, even though the composer himself described Stokowski’s

simplified soundtrack as ‘execrable‘.

For the RSNO’s April concerts, The Rite of Spring in its original version for huge orchestra plays an inspirational role in a programme of music entitled Rites and Rituals. ‘lt’s all about ritual sacrifice. It is the embodiment of rite,’ explains conductor Garry Walker.

Three modern American masterpieces precede Stravinsky, with Lou Harrison’s Piano Concerto

receiving its Scottish premiere. ‘He is a true world composer,’ says Walker, ‘and this piece is dominated by tabla rhythms that are used in the Hindu faith with a

returning rhythmic pattern that runs across the bars.

Also, the piano is deliberately tuned out of tune, so that it sounds almost like how people tuned instruments in the medieval period. It’s very strange. One movement is like Brahms, the next is pure Indian curry house.‘ Going with it are two pieces by minimalist John Adams, The Chairman Dances being particularly ritualistic in the way he uses his material, and the four-minute Tromba Lontana sounding like very simple, very beautiful,

meditative Budhhist chanting.

It‘s an unusual programme for the RSNO, but experiencing The Rite of Spring is one of life‘s essentials and, as Walker says: ‘You don’t always order the same food when you go to a restaurant, or look at the same pictures in an art gallery, so why should people always want to listen to the same music?‘
