CLUBS FOR GIRLS

PUSSY GALORE

Sandra Marron finds out about a new club which hopes to add spice to the Edinburgh scene

Sisters are doing it for themselves. Well, sort of. By all accounts, they’re getting there. Women-only club nights for lesbians have always been few and far between in Glasgow and Edinburgh, but thanks to the hard work and vision among certain quarters, there is a tasty new night for lesbians to get their teeth into and it launches this month at Ego. Furr Burger, (and yes, they believe in calling a spade a spade) is a new monthly club night ‘for girls who like girls, with an eclectic music policy’. Boys are welcome, provided they have a female escort and, according to promoter Sran Rossi, it is ‘going to be fun and a little bit random - silliness really’. Hence the blow-up dolls, girls on roller skates and the whole place decked out in pink flowers. So, cast off those pre-conceived notions that lesbians don’t have a sense of humour - these girls really do wanna have fun.

Off course the east coast is no stranger to such a notion. Velvet, the popular women’s night aimed at gay ladies and their invited men friends, has been flying that rainbow flag for girl-only clubbing get- togethers for some time. But, with the city having a relatively small lesbian scene, a spokeswoman for the club reiterates the obstacles in sustaining

lesbian-only club nights. ‘lt's a very fickle market; Velvet has been lucky that it has the right venue. It’s been through its ups and downs and it really has only just got on its feet. It's been a long, hard slog over many, many years.’

In Scotland, it seems, size does matter. Unlike London where clubs like Candy Bar are packed to the rafters each and every night, there just aren’t enough ladies on the scene to sustain the momentum. What to do? Well, like Velvet, Furr Burger is quite happy to let in members of the opposite sex. ‘It is predominantly aimed at younger women on the scene but we are inviting boys as well,’ Says Sran. ‘They can feel that they can go and have a women’s night without it being completely segregated.’

With Bennetts’ hugely popular ladies-only night Girls on Top forced to take time out last year due to extensive fire damage to the premises, gay women in Glasgow have had to look elsewhere for women-only company. One of the latest crazes to grip the scene is lesbian speed dating, courtesy of Glasgow city centre gay bar the Merchant Pride. A new event, it is gathering momentum at warp speed. Across town, the LGBT Centre also hosts women-only discos on occasion and, according to the lesbian grapevine, Girls on Top is due to open its doors again very soon. I Furr Burger, Ego, 74 P/cardy Place, Ed/nburgh, Thu 74 Apr; Velvet. Commp/ex, 40 Commercial Street, Le/‘th, is! Sat of month
