Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 22 Apr; Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow. Sat 23 Apr After ten years as RSNO principal conductor, the renowned Russian conductor Alexander Lazarev is now saying farewell. Bringing his tenure to an exhilarating conclusion in an all-Prokofiev programme, Lazarev leaves a strong legacy behind him. As Julian De Ste Croix, the orchestra’s acting chief executive, says: ‘For Russian repertoire, there is no-one better than Lazarev.‘

The cycles of Shostakovich and Prokofiev symphonies under Lazarev were, says De Ste Croix, ‘a bit of a risk’. RSNO programming usually offers audiences a mix of repertoire, and concentration on individual composers in a relatively short space of time was something different. ‘We were a bit worried at first,‘ says De Ste Croix, ‘but it is a fantastic experience to look back on. People will remember his work with great fondness.’

But with the Russian repertoire comes the Russian way of doing things. Former chief conductor and artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre - it is rare to hold both positions concurrently - Lazarev is, says De Ste Croix, ‘very much of the Russian school. He’d never say something like “well done" or “thank you for tonight’s performance” to the orchestra.’ But while they might not invite him for a pint down the local, and, despite the lack of niceties and the fact that he works them extremely hard, the orchestra do respect and

admire him.

Taking on the mantle of conductor emeritus, Lazarev’s links with the RSNO will remain close. Describing the players’ relationship with their principal conductor, Lazarev claimed that an orchestra is only happy twice - once when he arrives and once when he departs. The fact that he is coming back must surely speak volumes, or at least a bit more than the man himself.
