lomtweu '1; mus/ti today This lsSiie: The Summer of Mars

Vera Cruise were a criminally underrated Glasgow-based country rock band, but fear not because they’re back as the Summer of Mars and they‘ve got a belter of a new album, Glaciers, in shops now. So why the name change? Frontman Paul Smith spills the beans.

Another band called Vera Cruise With a big record deal appeared last year. We asked them to change their name and they wouldn't. They Suggested we sue them. because they had more money than us. and we'd lose. We didn't have a lot of choices.

The album was recorded in France. How come?

Craig Ward from Deus produced it. and he wanted to do it there. The studio's iun by a guy who did sound for Big Black. It's a great studio with a very punk rock philosophy.

You and bandmate Dave McGowan are Eugene Kelly’s backing band, and McGowan plays live with Teenage Fanclub. What’s that all about? I think it boils down to being around and wanting to play muSic With people. We're pretty good friends With Eugene. and I think he Just drafted in people he liked hanging out With. Dave can pretty much play any instrument you ask him to. so for the Fanclub that's pretty useful.

Your big dumb riffs and country twangs bring to mind everything from Mudhoney to the Lemonheads. A bit out of step with what’s seen as cool at the moment, aren’t you?

I don't mind being out of step With what's seen as cool. because otherWise we'd be trying to be fashionable. and that's probably the worst thing you can do. (Doug Johnstonel
