how significant Swensen’s Beethoven interpretations

have been since his first explosive concert featuring the Eroica symphony. For Swensen, the years spent with the 800 have

been, he says, ‘the happiest of my music-making life.

May is a somewhat eventful month for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. On one hand, there is all the excitement that goes with presenting world premiere performances of Three Pictures, by lnverness-born composer Stuart MacRae. And then, just a few days later, they have to say a more than conventionally fond farewell to Joseph Swensen, principal conductor of the orchestra for the past ten years.

Swensen’s tenure has formed a rare bond between conductor and players. Anyone who has been to their performances cannot fail to have been touched by the mesmerising effect brought about by his relationship with each and every one of the players. For his final concert, the one work on the programme is Beethoven’s mighty Missa Solemnis, a particularly apt choice given

The decision to leave this position was the most difficult one I have ever made.’ With the about to be donned mantle of conductor emeritus, Swensen will be back and, at some point, will surely team up with composer Stuart MacRae, who is one of the most interesting voices around in contemporary music at the moment.

His Three Pictures are not based on anything that can be found in a gallery. Rather, they are imaginary pictures. ‘Two of them explore the same conceptual image from opposing perspectives,’ MacRae explains. ‘One looks at events or objects of great activity or detail from a great distance, the other as if from within.’ The first is slow, the second fast and the third picture is based Solzhenitsyn’s vivid description of a painting from his novel, The First Circle.
