William Shakespeare walks into a pub. The landlord says: ‘Get out, you’re Bard!‘ Great joke, and also not too far from the premise of Northern Broadsides' new play, Sweet William. It was written by Alan Plater and commissioned by artistic director Barrie Rutter and is the first new work to be premiered by the company since it was set up in 1992.
The ‘boozy romp‘, which you can see on the Friday of this run, takes a light-hearted look at a night down the local alehouse with Will and his colourful mates. ‘The play features five original songs and all the cast play the instruments and sing on stage,’ says Rutter. Music, revelry and fun will be the order of the day. The Comedy of Errors is, of course, Shakespeare’s tried and tested formula of mistaken identities, confusion, wild coincidences and slapstick humour. You know the schtick: two sets of identical brothers were separated at birth and are searching for their other halves, leading to confusion, sexual identity crises and so on.
With a commitment to a ‘no frills’ approach, Northern Broadsides has established itself as a leader in the classic repertoire. Modern dress and minimal sets have led to the company being described as accessible, but as Rutter, who directs and stars in both productions, explains: ‘You don't go out to be accessible; it‘s all about storytelling’.
Music is an integral part of this. Musical director Conrad Nelson has been working with the company for over ten years and it’s this tight ensemble feel that ensures audiences keep coming back.
