MEN IN THEIR UNDERPANTS

~13. .15 t.) as; 2005 heats, Sun 15 May, Ego, Edinburgh It’s back again: the gay equivalent of a Miss Wet T-Shirt competition is swinging its way into Edinburgh. Last year, the waif-like Mark Roberts (pictured) - a 20 year old plasterer from Walsall - won the overall prize in the grand finale at London’s G-A-Y and then got himself on, deep breath, Cilla Live on Living TV. That's true celebrity. But even if the competition has its deliciously tacky moments, that hasn’t stopped hundreds of willing boys from stripping off in front of a baying audience. Could the next winner be you? Turn up to James Longworth’s Blaze event at Ego in Edinburgh on 15 May and find out. Expect tight shorts, taut pecs, much whooping, plenty innuendo and more mince than Sainsbury’s meat counter.

and lightness they have.’

In The Shade Leddy’s third solo in a row, is about psychic soul sister LaToya Levine and the divas she channels through herself. Surprisingly, Leddy also admits ‘It reflects my harshest view of the world. It is still funny, excessive and satirical but it’s very dark, very surreal, with characters who have had extreme plastic surgery to change race so that they can disguise themselves from each-other.’ Leddy has had an incredible fat suit costume designed for himself, ‘It has layer upon layer which peels off to reveal a different look that LaToya has - so there’s a sporty layer with Nike labels all over which reverses into an African caftan with pictures of guinea fowl all over it.’ Set in a deserted strip joint, on a big round bed where the peep show girls would previously have performed, Leddy admits ‘lt’s a balance between high camp fun things and a very bleak view of how white culture appropriates black culture to make money out of it. So it’s a critique of people like Mariah Carey.’ As a final selling point, Leddy confesses ‘lt’s also the dirtiest show I’ve ever done. It’s very sexual, very adult.’

Leddy promises meaty narrative with twists and turns, betrayals and disguises and ‘10 songs. It’s a musical in a kinda fucked up way!’ Working with director Kate Nelson for a second time, Leddy promises no padding, apart from his fat costume. ‘Kate’s very strict. Kate says David you just have to cut that, get rid of it. l’ve just seen too many solo shows where people haven’t been ruthless enough.’ (John Binnie)
