Beethoven’s only opera and one of the most famous of all ‘rescue’ operas, Fidelio is presented by Scottish Opera at a time when the company itself

desperately needs a rescue in the plot. Its last full scale production before the company goes dark for nine months, it tells of how Leonore, disguised as the boy Fidelio (sung by the wonderful Elizabeth Byrne - remember Briinnhilde?), rescues her husband, political prisoner Florestan. With Tim Albery as director and Richard Armstrong conducting, the company will go out on a high, but oh, how Scottish Opera must hope that its own Leonore is waiting somewhere in the wings.
