Around Town

PROFILE ;

Name Zigi Sapietis

Profession Sculptor

How long have you been in the job? Since I was four years old and I carried a penknife on a string around my waist.

How did you get into it? Creativity isn't a matter of getting into it. It's an innate process. Following my creative inclinations I studied at the Royal Academy for Fine Art in Denmark and at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Did you come across any difficulties in getting where you are? When I was 16 at the start of World War II I protested against the German occupation of Latvia and was sent to a concentration camp by the Gestapo. At the end of the war I was in hospital. but. despite a severe injury I was able to escape to Denmark on a submarine ot Latvians fleeing the Russians. As an exile I then had to overcome the difficulties of being accepted as a resident irt the UK and learning English.

What's the best bit about the job? There are no w0rst and best ‘bits' in creativity.

And the worst? The amount of time involved. A painting can be completed in a weekend a large sculpture can take a year to complete.

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you do? Die - my heart would stop beating. I Will die with a mallet in my hand. An artist cannot help themselves. Plans for the future? To continue to put my creative ideas into practice.

What would you do on your ideal day off? I don't have days off. I don't need them because I love to work in my studio. the garden which I have created.

I Zigi Sapietis' work is featured in Celebrating Sanctuary: Celebrating Success. an Amnesty international Scot/and exhibition at St George '3 West Church, Edinburgh. See listings, page 32 .
