THEATRE SCREAMING QUEENS Thu 16-Sat 18 Jun, Roxy Art House, Edinburgh

‘Every ironing board has an individual cover. 80, Mam is a floral pattern, Dad is a check, Wayne is a black leather and John is in blue denim with a white patch,’ explains Gerry Forristal, writer and performer of the one-man show Screaming Queens. One man, a ceramic dog and 14 ironing boards, to be precise.

Largely autobiographical, Screaming Queens charts the story of an adolescent Gerry as he moves from his home in rural Ireland to the bright lights of Dublin in search of his childhood sweetheart Tony. But on arriving in Dublin, a naive Gerry finds Tony shacked up with a new boyfriend who happens to be from one of Dublin’s most notorious crime families. Gerry is catapulted at warp speed into the frenzied underworld of the Dublin gay scene where he manages to get himself caught up in an endless stream of ridiculous scenarios and situations accompanied by an array of larger than life characters (ironing boards) he meets in the pubs, clubs and bedsits around the city. Enter Chrissie, the one-armed mother of Tony’s boyfriend and matriarch of the crime family, Benny ‘the Stretch’, the manic car thief and Wayne gay predator and the most screaming of all the queens. It’s dangerous, dazzling and downright good fun, and Gerry revels in his new life, its mad adventures and, of course, the drinking, the craic and the dancing.

But it’s not just a play about the gay scene and its inhabitants; there is a secondary story, one that focuses on the relationship between Gerry and his mother who has cancer. A story of tough lessons and growing up and the obnoxiousness of youth. ‘By the time you realise that a parent or a relationship with a family is important, unfortunately for some people it’s too late,’ explains our narrator. He is also quick to point out the selfishness of youth. ‘They believe that coming out and being out and being brazen and brash is more important. Our parents are entitled not to like us. When parents have gay children, the parents in their own right have to go through their own coming out process.’

Gerry is keen to point out that this is not just a coming out story for a gay audience, even though it has a lot of gay content. ‘If you have ever had a son or a daughter leave home, you’re going to get it. If you’re gay you’ll get this play. If you have a brother or a sister who has left home or who is gay - you’ll get this play.’

They say never work with children or animals but what about ironing boards? ‘You have to manipulate the ironing boards around the stage in a way that looks fluid. Moving an ironing board in everyday life is hard enough. They’re just so awkward.’

They sound just like people. (Sandra Marron)
