When you hear someone like Bill ‘Smog’ Callahan - with a

voice somewhere between polished mahogany and treacle - you really don’t really envisage him to look quite as he does. The weedy, almost apologetic demeanour is a cunning front for a songwriting talent that might suit a large, ragged, hirsute mountain man but somehow he manages to squeeze it into his slender frame. His newie A River Ain’t Too Much To Love might not set jaws a-dropping like its two predecessors do, but live, Callahan is still entrancing.

REASONS TO GO SEE

13‘ 3.; it” i" in.

1 It about time you did The dreamy east coast duo have been serenading melancholy melody-loving indie types for years and, with three albums of rich boy/girl vocals and fuzzy guitars already released. the mainstream should be lrankly ashamed for not cottoning onto them sooner.

2 The new LP is by far their finest work to date Although both 2003’s The Stereo & God and 2004‘s American Whip were hugely accomplished offerings, The Headlight Set out 6 June, combines the band's previous penchant for harmony-tilled. pensive guitar pop with a snappier. almost psychotically upbeat sound. In other words. it‘s ace.

3 They’ve got the coolest names in pop It doesn't get much better than Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale. Surely?

4 Their music makes you feel like summer’s arrived ‘Lying naked in the sun/making eyes at everyone' they sing on soaring new track '1' and scorching lazy days are instantly evoked. Even if you do live in Scotland.

5 You’re bound to fancy at least one of them Whatever flavour your favour. this kooky-looking boy and girl duo are incredibly cute and last time they played here shamelessly flirted with an already up- for-it Glasgow audience. You'd be a foot to miss it twice. (Camilla Pia)
