Widely praised for their ever innovative approach to programming, Cappella Nova have yet again come up with something different to surprise and delight. Although the Scots and the French may currently enjoy a bit of cultural bonding through a shared feeling of ‘non’ to the EU Constitution, there are, of course, lots of other characteristics that set the two Auld
Alliance nations apart.
Bonjour, Mon Coeur celebrates what Scots continue to find a bit of a mystery and the French have been world best at for ever - love and matters of the heart. Taken from a time when the contrast between the two nationalities was particularly pronounced, the concert programme explores 16th century music, poetry and what the Renaissance princes of Scotland
and France got up to at court.
Recent research proves the French still sit at the top of the chart when it comes to expertise in amour, and Bonjour, Mon Coeur sets this instinctive talent alongside the darker, emotional angst of the Scots. In a sequence of songs, sung by a quartet of voices in various combinations and instrumental pieces, the music displays the light, somewhat irreverent wit of the French one moment and the wailing and weeping of the Scots the next. With Hugh Campbell on lute and BBC announcer Gillean McDougall as reader, the evening promises a vignette of the various facets of love as experienced in France and Scotland almost 500 years ago. Perhaps we'll find that nothing much has changed. (Carol Main)
