An anagram of its original self. Booly Mardy‘s still champions its cocktail namesake and bartenders can create an impressive selection of both traditional and modern mixed drinks. The food menu offers salads. sandwiches and burgers -- supplemented by genuinely interesting specials such as sea bass fillets piled on charred Mediterranean vegetables with a delicate asparagus cream sauce. Take one of the tables spilling out onto the pavement and enjoy watching the West lind world trundle by.

Near the (‘ity Chambers. (‘afe ()stra‘s outdoor tables give pedestrianised John Street an authentically continental hull. on sunny days. A crayfish (‘aesar salad is a twist on tradition -- and a lighter choice in contrast to the signature fish soup studded with stem ginger. The menu offers flexibility rather than a rigid course-by-course approach: smaller dishes can include toasted crumpet with l‘innan haddock and black pudding or a chunkin filled crab omelette. (‘afe ()stra can offer an ample and elegant dining experience. but it can just as easily provide an informal drink and light snack.

If people-watching is your bag then you probably won‘t need any introduction to this (ilasgow eatery the only surviving branch in what was once a chain across Scotland. ()ccupying a prominent place in Royal lixchange Square with plenty of outdoor seating and full—length windows. (‘affe lino remains a busy city centre hangout especially on (ilasgow‘s warmer. drier days. The menu is a carefully constructed melange. combining pasta and pix/a dishes with American diner favourites.

contemporary arts venue‘s Scott Street bar is a more informal dining and drinking experience. Though somewhat limited. the menu is imaginative. The vegetable tempura with chilli sauce is a good dish to share with drinking buddies. With a south facing sun terrace in the summer months Scott Street Bar is a great outdoor venue too.

[Javela (pictured. above) sits next to ()stra and shares John Street‘s car-free cobbles. Despite the name. which is Portuguese for ‘shanty town'. the menu reflects the bar—restaurant‘s new direction. offering fleshy. (‘hinese-style live spice pork. hummus wraps and Moroccan beef alongside steamed mussels and pi/za selections. with linger-picking mez/e plates of salads. dips and meat. fish or vegetarian options for two people. Brunchers are is well catered for with full linglish or continental breakfasts. omelettes and focaccia sandwiches available.

This bar raises the bar: overlooking the canal. it has seating outdoors and the menu is an impressive eight—page tome with more than 20 main courses that rarely exceed £7. Meat and two veg-style main courses offer creamy mashed potatoes with piping hot mince and peas or haggis and neeps. Staff are always kept busy by a cheerful local crowd and. when the sun is out. many more come in search of a picnic table by the water.
