events are happening all day. The march itself goes north from the Meadows. down George IV Bridge and the Mound. then along Princes Street. From there it will turn up Lothian Road. onto Castle Terrace and Lady Lawson Street then back to the Meadows. How do I get there? Ihe organisers warn against driving as roads may be closed and parking will be restricted. Instead use either public transport er a chartered coach (see vwvw.niakepovertyliistorybrg for details). If there isn't a coach going from your area you can arrange your own. but please register with Make Poverty History. There will be clearly marked routes from Waverley and l Iayrnarket Stations. as well as from the bus stops at Waterloo Bridge. to the Meadows. Train or bus stations are likely to be too busv to be easy meeting points.
Can I take kids? Yes — Midge Ure is taking his. T The day is planned as a peaceful family event.
Is there disabled access? Yes. There is a
specific drop off point for disabled people at the
south east corner of the Meadows. as well as
disabled toilets. Wheelchair users should be aware that parts of the march are very hilly. and are advised . to bring a companion. i How many people are expected? Officially the organisers are expecting 100.000. although Bob Geldol‘s call for a million supporters has put the cat amongst the pigeons. Current estimates are upwards
of 250.000 people. Make Poverty History requests 5 that you register on its website if you plan to attend. ' so they can accurately gauge numbers.
Do I need to'take anything? Organisers want everyone to wear white. so the march creates a symbolic white band around the City centre. They also want you to bring a message to the G8 leaders with you. which they will collect on a vast ‘sculpture' in the Meadows and deliver to Gleneagles.
What about accommodation? Budget hostel and camping accommodation is available specifically for the event. See the Make Poverty HistOry website for details. In addition, the council has set up a large campsite facility at Hunter's Hall Park in Niddrie in the south of the city. It can cater for 15.000 people. There will be no camping in the Meadows.
Can I march on Gleneagles? Not with Make Poverty History. The March against the G8 takes place on Wednesday 6 July. and is supperted by various bodies. including the Stop the War Coalition. the Muslim Association of Britain and S'TUC.
