Music for the masses
London’s may be bigger, but Edinburgh’s Live8 gig is the show to end it all, says Doug Johnstone.
espite the speed vvith which it has been put together. the forthcoming live music extravaganza at lidinburgh‘s Murraylield Stadium on Wednesday (i .luly is on its vvay to becoming the biggest music event ever held in
the country. The concert is part of a week of
action from l.ive8. the organisation put together by Sir Bob (ieldof. Midge lire and Richard (‘urtis to put pressure on the (i8 leaders meeting in (ilcncagles from (i to 9 July.
There are eight (and counting) other concerts being held in London. Paris. Berlin. Rome. Philadelphia. Tokyo. Toronto and Johannesburg but all of them are on Saturday 2 July. whereas the lidinburgh shovv. being called lidinburgh 50.000 — The Final Push (the number of people who die of poverty every day). acts as a closing event for the action four days later.
The aim of all the concerts is not to raise
money but to increase avvareness of the aims of
Make Poverty History. With that in mind. the 60.000-odd tickets have been allocated according to a text lottery. with the money raised covering the expense of putting on the concert. There will also be several stages on the fields around Murraylield for those who couldn’t get tickets. with vvorld rnusic festival organisers WOMAI) responsible for much of the programming.
The Murraylield event. hosted by comedians Peter Kay and Lenny llenry. promises something

for everyone. The Murraylield masses will be treated to everything from the rock of limbrace. the '/.utons and the Thrills to the African sounds of Youssou N'Dour and the poppy likes of Sugababes and McFly.
Solo artists from a wide range of genres vvill also appear. with Dido. Ronan Keating and Lucie Silvas lining up alongside the likes of precocious jazz lad Jamie (‘ullum and Welsh classical sensation Katherine Jenkins. Also appearing are both Daniel and Natasha Bedirtglield. arid the Murraylield gig vvill feature (ieldof’s only music performance in the whole of l.ive8. when he turns in a set alongside Midge l're.
Needless to say. Scottish bands arid artists will make up a large part of the line-up for the shovv. The Proclaimers kick off proceedings in their inimitable style. with Travis. Texas. Wet Wet Wet. Annie Lennox and adopted Scots Snovv Patrol also performing.
For Snovv Patrol singer (iary Lightbody the reasoning behind the event is clear: ‘lt's all about justice. It's about kids having enough food to live healthily. having a right to decent education. stopping corruption. developing a self-sustaining economy and proper health care. (‘an vve really admit to our children that vve didn‘t care enough about 30.000 children dying daily because they were too poor to live'.’ We vvill hold the (‘18 accountable. If they say yes to doubling aid. cancelling I009“? of the debts ovved by poor countries and delivering trade justice for Africa. they will go dovvn in history. And vve vvill become the generation that stopped this shameful disgrace.’
Key parts of the bill remained unconfirmed as we vvent to press. but with charity events going on outside the stadium all day and speakers including (‘looney. Pitt and Bono lined up (as we vvent to press the involvement of the Pope and the Dalai Lama vvas still to be confirmed). it'll be a day that no one vvill forget in a hurry.
