CHARACTER COMEDY JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH

Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Sun 26 Jun

Who or what is John Shuttleworth? Well, according to his CV, he’s a ‘versatile singer/songwriter’ who also ‘does a bit of drama and is available for in-store promotions, theme nights, sheltered accommodation etc.’ But this modest introduction does no justice to the entertainer, organist and peerless star of such BBC comedy classics as The Shuttleworths, Radio Shuttleworth and 500 Bus Stops.

In the real world, of course, Shuttleworth is the creation of one Graham David Fellows, the former milkman who sulked all the way to number four in the charts as Jilted John back in 1978. While the current whereabouts of John’s sidekick Gordon the Moron and treacherous girlfriend Julie are unknown, Fellows continues to cheer and charm from the shelter of his subsequent comic guises, such as rock musicologist Brian Appleton and ranting ‘laser screeding contractor’ Dave Tordoff.

In his latest live show, Fawn Again, Fellows’ unassuming Shuttleworth shares his sense of vertiginous panic as his children fly the nest and his long-suffering wife prepares to retire from her job as a school dinner lady. Life is soaring by like a pigeon in flight and, despite the unleashing of such inimitable classics as ‘The Yamaha Years’ and ‘One Foot in the Gravy’, John still hasn’t secured that elusive hit record. Perhaps it’s time he started thinking the unthinkable and replacing his agent-cum-next door neighbour Ken Worthington (AKA TV’s Clarinet Man) with someone a bit more dynamic. (Allan Radcliffe)
