A music newsy do, not a snoozy do

Fizzy drink overlord Coca- Cola is sponsoring two free shows in Scotland as part of its Centrestage promotion, and has given local bands the chance to take part. Goldfrapp will be playing the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on 8 September, with support coming from the hotly tipped Kubb and Londoners Hard-Pi. A show at the Academy in Glasgow has Dogs, the Subways and an unconfirmed headline act appearing on 28 July. Organisers have arranged for local acts to open each show, and tickets are free, available by visiting www.coca- colacentrestage.com.

One of our favourite music fanzines. Beard. is putting on a free night of ‘music. fun and facial hair' at Glasgow's Mono on 1 1 July. Performing will be Glasgow bands the Sky at Night and Skeleton Bob. plus a visit from American indie maestro, Mack Messiah and. of course, you’ll be able to pick up the latest edition of Beard, voted Best Music Fanzine at the EMAP Fanzine Awards this year.

iii, The List always welcomes a new independent music retailer, so let’s hear it for Elvis Shakespeare (quality name), a new secondhand music and book shop (with a chilled out coffee shop thrown in) opening this week at 347 Leith Walk in Edinburgh. There’s a launch party at 6pm, 7 July, with Dolphinboy DJing, then they’re open for relaxed business the next day.
