2 9 8 7- 2 C O 5 Whatever you may feel about Burt Bacharach, you might grudgingly admit that there’s something very evocative about the song ‘Always Something There to Remind Me’. Perhaps because it captures, through complex harmonies and simple lyrics, a feeling most of us have shared. There are places, perhaps in the town where you live, or the landscape you left behind, that are too painful to go to, such is their association with lost love. There are certainly bits of this city that I avert my eyes from as I pass. Too many ghosts - you probably know the feeling.
It’s a remarkable feat to realise this in theatre, yet the young company Highway Diner, three of whose company sit around me on some steps, as The List’s courtyard party offers endless distraction around us. Over the band playing, beyond the boozing arts workers and backs, Laura Cameron Lewis, Kieran McLaughlin and Christopher Morgan envelope me in their youthful zeal, taking me away from it all, to a place created in their teeming collective imagination. ‘lt’s about how when you feel love, it’s always associated with the place where you felt it. It’s about an emotional landscape that can also be a physical relationship,’ explains Cameron Lewis of this tale of two lovers, lost and separated by space. ‘lt’s about how lovers need to find someone, trying to find their way to each other. And if you’ve left love behind, you even bring the city you left with you, and see where you were when you felt love in the place where you are,’ says McLaughlin.
Already highly praised for Works of Temporary Solace, the company has a shared philosophy, which gives us the measure of its freshness. ‘Our philosophy is to be, as much as possible and at every point, a total amateur,’ says Cameron Lewis, initially unpromisingly. But when you hear a little more, you get the point: ‘It’s very easy to rely on already learned motifs and themes as a professional. To be amateur is always being on the edge,’ says Morgan. This idea, the professional with the enthusiasm of the amateur, promises to bring you, too, to the edge. (Steve Cramer)
