DJ Dispatch

Beat 106's underground ambassador Mash gives the lowdown.

I'm on pause when it comes to buying an iPod. They are well designed gadgets. i own a Mac, I love music. but not even U2‘s black Knight Rider limited edition version has made me take the plunge. l’m sure I will one day. i remember the day I said l would never play 008. sticking to the original DJ format of vinyl. But now i have succumbed. and my sets are roughly half and half. The speed of CD releases and promos compared with their vinyl grandparents means that I would rather be playing the best music than sticking to my vinyl allegiance. DJ-iriendly CD players have improved so much that they are as much a DJ box essential as the ubiquitous Technics 1200 series. Apparently iPod mixers are on the way which will mean the DJ of the future will look even more like he is checking his emails.

Don't get me wrong. Technological advances like Ableton Live and Final Scratch are amazing. giving DJs live remixing capabilities. MP3s are definitely good for DJs’ backs instead of carrying 100 slabs of vinyl. Maybe I'm showing my age, but when l was a nipper the tracks you didn‘t like on an album you had to fast forward - nowadays you just don’t download that track. They also had names. but not on the iShuffle. How many albums have you bought that have grown on you and you have ended up loving more. including that previously loathed experimental track. Albums also have artwork and sleevenotes instead of black text on a pale grey backdrop. I've not yet heard the phrases 'check out my MP3 collection' and 'let me do you a playlist’. i think I need to fast forward.

I Catch Mash every Friday at Vandal at the Liquid Lounge and on Beat 106’s Xpress Beats
