They read books on stage. are notorious for their geek chic image and write songs about the New Wave and Situationism of 1968-era Paris. But like the rest of us enjoy a nip of Jack Daniel‘s now and again. We catch up with frontman Paul Smith to find out more and to chat about their forthcoming performance at Mr Jack‘s birthday bash in Nashville. Tennessee.

‘We're really looking fon/vard to it.‘ he pipes over the chatter of a busy tour bus. ‘We've never been to Nashville. the home of country music. so I can't wait to investigate it and see some famous landmarks. I‘m also interested in seeing the other acts we're playing with. Editors and The Features. as I‘ve heard a lot about them and it's going to be nice to play to competition winners who have been flown over specially. I think it will be a very special night.‘ he adds. 'and although we're not exactly known for it. we're going to try and be the most rock‘n'roll band of the night.‘

Exciting gig opportunities like this are becoming more and more frequent for the Newcastle quintet whose magnificent debut. A Certain Trigger has recently been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Smith. who was asked to join the band after drummer Tom English‘s girlfriend heard him singing along to Stevie Wonder‘s ‘Superstition‘ in a local nightspot. plans to enjoy every second of this new found success. ‘You've got to make the most of life in a band and I see this as a massive chance to do things I could never have done if I hadn't joined. We feel very lucky to be where we are but we‘re also proud of the record. It is invigorating and energetic and emotional and we just want to get it to as many people as we can.‘

With plans to continue touring until their biggest headlining shows to date at the end of the year. it only seems a matter of time before Maximo Park convert the masses to their quirky ways of thinking. Headline- makers they may not be. but it's always the quiet ones you've got to watch. (Camilla Pia)

IN TENNESSEE!!

September is a celebratory month for the folks at Jack Daniel’s. With the records of Mr Jack Daniel’s exact date of birth lost to history in a courthouse fire, they are inclined to celebrate during the whole month.

The List has got together with Jack Daniel’s to offer one pair of tickets to this once in a lifetime event. Tickets for this gig are not for sale, which makes this a real ‘money can’t buy’ prize. The winner plus a friend will jet over to the US on Friday 16 September and spend an amazing weekend in the homeland of Jack Daniel’s, with return flights and four-star accommodation provided. Guests will also be treated to a tour of the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, the oldest registered distillery in the US, where every single drop of Jack Daniel’s is made. Birthday celebrations will officially kick off on Saturday night, after an authentic southern BBQ, when Maximo Park, Editors and The Features will perform live for an audience of just 200 specially invited people.
