This year's shortlist features two plays dealing with the terrible aftermath of the conflict in Iraq. Volcano's My Pvra/iiids is Judith Thompson's provocative imagining of the life of Pl’l‘.£ll(} l ynndie Lngland. which features a gripping performance by Waneta Storm. Meanwhile. Peter Morris' Guardians explores the shocking hilliian rights abuses at Abu Ghraib prison.

Certain Curtain lheatre's lady in Red portrays the effects of domestic Violence ‘.‘/llll a terrific performance at its centre from Claiie Moore. while The EXO/lerated proVides a powerful insight into the lives of six erroneously coliVicled death row inmates.

Programme director for Amnesty International Scotland. Rosemary Burnett. said of the selection: ‘We are delighted to announce a short—list of such exciting. hiin giiality productions. The winner of the award will be announced at the Assembly Hall on Friday 26 August at 10am.

I Karen 0 Novak, AKA Fringe performer ‘Mistress 0’, experienced a disturbing incidence of life imitating art when she moved into her rented flat in Edinburgh. First she noticed a small sign above the bathroom door that said ‘Concealed CCTV cameras in operation’. Upon further inspection, she found that the walls of the walk-in closet of the master bedroom were completely covered with photographs of naked women. Needless to say, Novak sought alternative accommodation.

I Mental Health charity Breathing Space is to offer advice to Festival entertainers after a survey revealed that stress levels among performers has risen exponentially. The study, involving 50 Fringe participants, found that 84% had rising stress levels before and during performances. Fear of failure was given as the most common reason, with 14% describing their symptoms as ‘severe’.
